Exclusions: How do they work?

The following explains the use of course exclusions in programs sponsored by CIRHR.

Please review the details listed in the accordion below and follow the directions noted here:

  • Students wishing to use an exclusion to fulfill a course prerequisite must alert the Program Office immediately after enrolling in the course else they risk having their enrolment cancelled.  Once removed from a course, students must enrol in the course or add themselves on the waiting list via ACORN.  Reinstatment is not possible if the course is full.

  • Students wishing to have an exclusion counted towards an IRHR or WO program must contact the Program Office in a timely manner.

  • Students who have questions about using exclusions in their other programs must contact the corresponding academic unit.

An exclusion is a course that is deemed to have content that significantly overlaps with another course.

Students may not receive degree credit for a course that lists as an exclusion a course they are currently taking or a course they have already passed. If they enrol in such a course, they may be removed at any time during the enrolment period at the discretion of the CIRHR Program Office. If allowed to remain enrolled in an excluded course, the second course taken will be designated Extra. For details on extra courses and repeating courses check the Calendar.

There are several courses in our programs that list exclusions from other units, such as ECO, PSY and SOC. These can be used to fulfill requirements in undergraduate programs offered by CIRHR. Please note the following limitations:

  • Exclusion can'tt be designated as "CR"
  • A 100 or 200 level exclusion cannot satisfy a 300 or higher level course/program requirement
  • Students wishing to take the exclusion rather than the IRE/IRW course should note that this isn't always possible. Students must observe any enrolment/program requirements set by the unit offering the course. CIRHR has no control over this. For example: RSM361H1 is available to commerce students only. No exceptions will be made.

Here is a list of exclusions that can count towards program requirements:

  • IRE242H1: We will accept RSM361H1
  • IRE260H1: We will accept PSY332H1 or RSM260H1
  • IRW379H1: We will accept ECO220Y1
  • IRW220H1: We will accept ECO220Y1/ EEB225H1/ GGR270H1/ POL222H1/ PSY201H1/ SOC202H1/ STA220H1/ STA238H1/ STA248H1/ STA288H1/ MGEB12H3/ PSYB07H3/ STAB22H3/ STAB23H3/ ECO227Y5/ PSY201H5/ STA215H5/ STA218H5/ STA220H5
  • IRW300H1: We will accept WWR300H

To have an exclusion counted towards your program please email the request to the Program Coordinator and make sure to include your student id number.

IMPORTANT:  To avoid any issues contact the Program Office to receive permission to take such a course.   Students who are removed from such a course will only be reinstated if there is space is available else they will have to add themselves to the waiting list.

Degree explorer does not pick up exclusions when assessing course prerequisites. If you would like to use an exclusion to meet an IRE/IRW course prerequisite, you must inform our office as soon as you enrol else you risk being removed from the course. Email the request to the Program Coordinator and make sure to include your student id number. If you are removed from a course, reinstatement will only be possible if there is space in the course.

Exclusions marked as CR can be used to satisfy course prerequisites only (but not Program requirements! see #2 above).
