The purpose of the Mentorship Program is to provide MIRHR students with an opportunity to connect with the professional community, develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace and to gain invaluable career guidance. By sharing their experiences and insights, mentors provide professional and career guidance to the next generation of practitioners. Mentors help students improve their communication and relationship-building skills, and provide them with an opportunity for personal growth and learning.
How it Works
Students submit an application in November and are matched with a mentor based on their career goals and interests. The commitment is for two meetings of approximately one hour each. Students are provided with goals to help foster discussion and enhance their learning outcomes.
First contact by mid-to-late January
Suggested topics include: resume feedback, discussion of career goals, strategies, and desired outcomes.
Second contact by mid-to-late February
Topics for discussion may include steps to achieving career goals, industry trends and future challenges, skills necessary for success and suggestions for professional growth.
Mentors and mentees who are interested in continuing their relationship outside the CIRHR Mentorship Program may do so if both parties agree.
If you are interested in participating in the Mentorship program or require further information please contact Kathleen Leon at kathleen.leon@utoronto.ca.
Coffee Chats with CIRHR Alumni
Current MIRHR students are encouraged to meet with CIRHR alumni for information gathering meetings to learn more about the field of Human Resources and Industrial Relations, gain first-hand knowledge of possible career opportunities and learn from the experiences of graduates who have gone on to successful careers in the field.
Students and alumni have an opportunity to meet and connect on an informal basis through meetings that are usually one hour in length.
