Biography
Professor Frank Reid has taught for many years at the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources at the University of Toronto, and he currently teaches a full course load in the graduate MIRHR program and the undergraduate major program in Industrial Relations and Human Resources. He has also been cross-appointed as a Professor in the UofT Department of Economics. During his two, six- year terms (1997-2009) as the Director of the CIRHR, the 12-month MIRHR program was established, and the Centre acquired the power to hire its own faculty. Previously, the CIRHR simply brought together faculty hired by various other departments who had an intertest in employment issues. During his term as Director, the name of the Centre (and its various degrees) was changed from the Centre for Industrial Relations to the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources, to better reflect the Centre’s long-standing engagement with HR issues. Professor Reid has also recently completed ten years of service (2014-2024) as the Associate Director and Graduate Coordinator for the MIRHR program at the Centre. He has also served as President of the Canadian Industrial Relations Association.
In addition to authoring and coauthoring various books and chapters in books, Professor Reid’s research has been published in highly regarded Canadian and American academic journals in economics and in the industrial relations and human resources area, such as the American Economic Review, the Industrial and Labor Relations Review, the Canadian Journal of Economics, and Industrial Relations/Relations Industrielles. His research has a strong policy focus and two of his main research interests have been worksharing / jobsharing and the impacts of changing laws on mandatory retirement.
