Biography : 

Mikael Swayze is a senior university HR and LR professional with a broad background including university governance, strategic human resources and labour relations. Mikael has over 30 years’ experience providing strategic advice regarding achievement of human resources and labour relations goals in addition to negotiating close to 100 collective agreements over the course of his career. Mikael has taught at the Centre for over 15 years in the MIRHR at the UofT. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Labour-Management Relations at Toronto Metropolitan University.

Mikael currently holds the position of Director, Academic Human Resource Services in the Faculty of Arts & Science, University of Toronto where he leads a team of HR professionals dealing with unionized and non-unionized employees in the Faculty. Previous to this role, Mikael held leadership positions in the UofT labour relations department and prior to that in the Canadian Union of Public Employees as a senior staff representative, negotiator, communicator and organizer.

Mikael has also previously served on the Council of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, the National Executive Board of the Canadian Union of Educational Workers, and served as the President of the Canadian Association of Labour Media.

In 2023-24 Mikael served as an international expert consultant for the School of Arts & Sciences, University of Central Asia providing advice on the governance and management structure of the School.

Mikael holds graduate degrees in Employment and Labour Law (from Osgoode Hall) and Political Science (from York University) as well as an undergraduate degree in Economics (from McGill).
